1960s Heritage Shophouse In Gouache With Geri Koh

Registrations are closed

Explore the timeless beauty of Singapore’s heritage shophouses through the bold and expressive medium of gouache. In this guided workshop with artist and illustrator Geri Koh, participants will learn how to capture the architectural charm and rich details of shophouses while experimenting with colour, form, and stylistic interpretation.

What to Expect:

  • Studio or on-location painting session:

    • Focused on heritage shophouse architecture — from ornate windows and doors to tiled facades and decorative details.

    • Participants will work from photographs or live observation, depending on the setting.

  • Introduction to Gouache:

    • Learn the unique properties of gouache — its matte, opaque finish and quick-drying flexibility.

    • Techniques include layering, flat color application, blending, and adding fine details.

  • Artistic guidance from Geri Koh:

    • Demonstration of how to block out shapes and build up details gradually.

    • Tips on simplifying complex architectural elements without losing character.

    • Individual feedback and support tailored to your style and goals.

  • Color & Style Exploration:

    • Use expressive color palettes — from muted vintage tones to bold contemporary schemes.

    • Emphasis on artistic interpretation rather than photorealism.

    • Develop a stylized approach to capturing textures like wood, tiles, and plaster.

  • Composition & Framing:

    • Learn how to frame your scene effectively — choosing a compelling angle or architectural detail.

    • Tips on cropping and layout for storytelling and aesthetic balance.

Who Should Join:

  • Beginners to intermediate artists interested in architectural subjects.

  • Artists looking to explore gouache as a medium.

  • Heritage and culture enthusiasts who enjoy visual storytelling.
