Beautiful Eyes - Let's Go Window Shopping With Paul Wang (Session 1)
Buildings are like breathing, living organisms. They possess human-like characteristics, such as complex skin and structural systems designed to protect inhabitants from harsh elements. Over time, humans created openings in these protective fortresses, leading to the development of windows and doors, much like our eyes and mouth. These openings allowed spatial connections, illuminated dark interiors, and enabled free air flow. They may even reveal hidden stories beyond the walls.
Observing the size, shape, and ornamentation of these openings provides valuable insights into how people adapt to their climate and live their lives. In this workshop, we will focus on drawing and painting these openings as strong focal points in our sketches. Let’s go window shopping and explore the stories beyond the walls!
Learning Objectives:
This workshop aims to study and accurately depict windows and doors to convey a sense of time and place. The viewer's attention is often drawn to the ‘eyes’ of a building, making it crucial to represent them effectively on the façade. Openings behave differently under various lighting conditions—direct sunlight, cloudy days, and sunset backlighting.
Paul will also use the concepts of RESIST – SOFTEN – BLEND to help participants enjoy sketching windows successfully on location.
- Sketch and paint windows in three lighting conditions: direct sunlight, diffused light, and artificial lighting.
- Depict and suggest reflections on window panes.
- Consider anomalies, distortions, and ornamentation.
