CHIJMES In Watercolor With Kanchan Mehendale
Step into one of Singapore’s most iconic heritage landmarks through watercolour. This workshop draws inspiration from CHIJMES, where elegant Gothic Revival architecture, soaring arches, stained-glass windows, and manicured courtyards create a distinctive blend of history and contemporary city life. Subtle elements of the surrounding urban landscape may appear in the background, situating the scene within modern Singapore while preserving the architectural beauty and atmosphere of the landmark.
Led by Kanchan Mehendale, participants will explore how to interpret CHIJMES in watercolour by balancing architectural structure with atmospheric expression. The focus is on simplifying intricate details such as arches, columns, windows, and decorative elements while capturing the interplay of light and shadow across the building’s white facades. Attention is given to composition, allowing architectural forms, open spaces, and surrounding greenery to work together naturally and guide the viewer’s eye through the painting.
What You Will Learn
• Essential watercolour techniques (wet-on-wet, layering, brush control)
• How to mix and use colours to create vibrant facades
• Creating depth, light & shadow for a lively street scene
• Simplifying architectural details with confidence
• Adding expressive, loose details to bring your painting to life

The theme centres on CHIJMES, a celebrated heritage site known for its elegant Gothic Revival architecture and rich history. The striking white buildings, graceful arches, detailed windows, and landscaped courtyards create a compelling subject for watercolour exploration. The combination of architectural rhythm, open spaces, and changing light offers opportunities to study perspective, tonal contrast, and colour harmony while capturing the timeless charm of one of Singapore’s most recognisable landmarks.
