Chinatown Shophouses In Watercolor With Kanchan Mehendale
Step into Singapore’s historic streets through watercolour. This workshop draws inspiration from Chinatown’s shophouses, where rows of colourful facades, intricate architectural details, and narrow streets create a vibrant dialogue between heritage and everyday life. Subtle elements of modern Singapore may appear in the background, grounding the scene within the city’s evolving landscape without overpowering the traditional character.
Led by Kanchan Mehendale, participants will explore how to interpret this layered streetscape in watercolour by balancing architectural rhythm with atmospheric depth. The focus is on simplifying repeating forms such as windows, shutters, and ornamental details while capturing light, shadow, and the unique character of the buildings. Attention is given to composition, allowing structures, sky, and street elements to work together naturally and guide the viewer’s eye through the scene.
