Registrations are closed

Join us for a hands-on workshop where tradition meets innovation — Etching Printmaking: Cats & Dogs, led by Zhang Qiao, a multidisciplinary creative with over a decade of experience spanning art, design, AI, and data engineering.

Currently focused on developing eco-friendly electro-etching techniques, Zhang is reimagining printmaking through a sustainable lens — making it safer, more accessible, and kinder to the environment. In this session, he will share a non-toxic, natural etching method that is virtually unseen in the world of print — offering a fresh perspective on an age-old craft.

Through guided instruction, participants will explore line, texture, and tone by creating their own expressive etchings inspired by the charm and personality of cats and dogs.

Why Join?

Traditional etching often involves harmful chemicals — but Zhang Qiao’s method opens a new path: one that retains the expressive quality of etching while prioritising safety, sustainability, and innovation. This workshop is perfect for beginners, educators, or artists seeking environmentally responsible practices.

 About The Subject

Etching is a centuries-old intaglio printmaking technique where an image is incised into a metal plate and transferred to paper using ink and a press. Traditionally, this involves the use of acid to etch lines into copper or zinc — a process that requires careful handling and controlled environments.

In this workshop, Zhang introduces a modern, chemical-free variation of etching that eliminates the need for toxic materials, replacing them with natural, safe alternatives. The result retains the rich texture and fine linework of classic etching, while opening up the process to new contexts — including classrooms, community spaces, and home studios.

About The Artist

Zhang Qiao is a multidisciplinary creative professional with over ten years of experience across fine art, design, AI, and data engineering. His practice blends technical innovation with artistic tradition, often exploring the intersections between science and the handmade. Currently based in Singapore, Zhang is deeply invested in developing eco-friendly, electro-etching techniques that transform conventional printmaking into a safer and more sustainable art form. His research into natural materials and non-toxic processes reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility — and a belief that artmaking should be both expressive and accessible.
