Hawker Storefront In Watercolor With James Lim

Registrations are closed

Join James Lim, founder of IG @cafesketcherssg, for Hawker Storefront in Watercolor, a sketch journaling workshop that celebrates the vibrant heart of Singapore’s hawker culture.

In this session, James will guide participants through observing and sketching the unique architectural charm of hawker stalls, from nostalgic signboards and tiled counters to the bustling atmosphere that defines these spaces. Using watercolor and pen, you’ll learn how to break down complex scenes into approachable steps, capturing both structure and spirit in your accordion notebook.

James will share techniques for composing lively storefront scenes, applying expressive watercolor washes, and highlighting the textures and details that give each stall its character. Participants will also pick up tips on simplifying busy scenes while preserving their essence—perfect for sketch journaling on location.

About The Subject
Hawker centres are living canvases of everyday life in Singapore. Through sketch journaling, portray the rhythm of morning kopi rituals, the gleam of metal woks, and the layered textures of signboards and shutters. Capture human connections—vendors preparing dishes, regulars exchanging greetings, and passersby drawn in by the aroma. Let your accordion notebook become a vibrant record of these beloved spaces, blending art and storytelling to celebrate the cultural soul of Singapore’s hawker scene.
