Making Friends With Watercolor Series 2 With Raymond Li (4-Thursday)

Registrations are closed

The second series of “Making Friends with Watercolor” builds on the foundational concepts introduced in Series 1. In the first series, students learned the essentials of watercolor painting, including pigment consistency, paper wetness, color theory, color mixing, and more. Series 2 is designed to deepen those core concepts with a stronger emphasis on application and creative independence.

While Series 1 focused on balancing theory and practice—leaning more towards theory—Series 2 encourages students to apply their skills more freely. In Series 1, students followed detailed step-by-step instructions to produce simple landscape paintings. In contrast, Series 2 challenges students to make their own artistic decisions, guided by coaching and feedback from the instructor.

Key Syllabus for Series 2 (First Three Lessons)
• Advancing tonal value mastery
• Exploring more sophisticated color use
• Improving composition techniques
• Enhancing the painting process and preparation, including color studies, value studies, and practical exercises

Students will also explore how to paint common subjects such as plantations, trees, foliage, rocks, calm and stormy water, cloudy skies, varying shades of green, and may be even building perspective and creating expressive small figures if situations arise.

The series concludes with a Lesson 4 painting project, where students will have the autonomy to choose a subject of personal interest, plan their composition, and execute the painting independently. The instructor will provide guidance and support throughout the process, helping students bring their creative vision to life.
