Pet Portrait In Gouache With Geri Koh
Discover the process of painting a pet portrait using gouache, a medium valued for its rich colour and smooth matte finish. In this workshop, participants will learn how to observe the unique features and personality of a pet and translate them into a structured painting. Using a reference image, the session will begin with simple sketching methods to establish accurate proportions and expressive shapes before gradually building layers of colour.
Participants will explore practical techniques for working with gouache, including colour mixing, layering opaque and semi-opaque paint, and controlling brushwork to create fur texture, depth, and form. Guidance will also be provided on simplifying complex details, capturing light and shadow, and balancing colour to bring character and life into the portrait.
By the end of the session, participants will gain a clear understanding of how to approach pet portrait painting with gouache and develop confidence in constructing a portrait step by step. The workshop provides an accessible introduction to observational painting while offering useful techniques that can be applied to future portrait and illustration work.
