Travel Sketch Journaling With Thain Lin
Have you ever wanted to capture the spirit of your travels without missing out on the moments themselves? Join artist Thain Lin for an immersive sketch journaling workshop inspired by the vibrant charm of Japanese food trucks. In this session, Thain Lin will guide you through how to document your food adventures on the go—without sacrificing time for sightseeing, street eats, or meaningful conversations.
Through a mix of live demonstration and hands-on coaching, participants will explore how to quickly sketch food trucks, street scenes, and local delicacies in a way that’s fun, personal, and visually memorable. You’ll learn how to simplify complex scenes, apply expressive colour washes, and build confidence in your sketching flow.
Thain Lin will also share his personal sketching gear and journals, offering practical advice on what to pack and how to prepare your sketchbook for a creative travel experience. His tips and techniques are also useful for urban sketching or everyday journaling.
Topics covered in this workshop include:
– An introduction to travel sketching: the “why, what and how”
– Essential sketching kits and tools for travel
– The art of simplification in sketching: how to draw fast and effectively
– Techniques for adding colour washes and atmosphere
– Hands-on sketching of Japanese food truck scenes on A5 watercolour cards or your own sketchbook
By the end of this workshop, you’ll have captured your own slice of Japan’s street food culture through sketches—ready to relive the experience long after the trip is over.
About The Subject
Japanese food trucks are a delightful blend of design, culture, and culinary creativity. Often compact and uniquely styled, these mobile eateries serve everything from takoyaki and yakitori to artisanal coffee and seasonal desserts. Each food truck is a story in itself—reflecting regional identity, craftsmanship, and the vibrant street food culture of Japan. Their colourful signage, charming setups, and steaming dishes make them perfect subjects for on-location sketching.
About The Artist
Thain Lin is a self-taught urban sketcher and experienced artist cum trainer. On weekdays, Thain Lin manages and runs IT projects in a large professional business services firm. On weekends and during his leisure time, he passionately indulges in the process of creating artworks as a means of visually communicating and documenting the urban space around him. He usually paints in his favourite mediums of ink and watercolours of his pet architecture subjects – heritage buildings and shophouses, accompanied by luscious greenery and distinctive human figures. He also enjoys meeting people and helps his clients to paint their homes and favourite places. It’s almost a cliché to say that art is a way to communicate happiness, and that is evidently shown in Thain Lin’s artworks.
