Watercolor Workshop - From Photo To Expressive Painting With Brian Tai
In this workshop, students will learn how to transform an ordinary reference photo into a compelling and expressive watercolour painting. Rather than copying the photo exactly, participants will discover how to interpret, edit, and elevate their subject using artistic principles.
Using architectural street scenes as examples, this session will guide students through the creative decision-making process behind every strong painting.
What You Will Learn
1. Strengthening Composition with Art Theory
Understand how to adjust the original photo composition to create better balance, focal points, and visual flow. Learn how to apply principles such as the rule of thirds, value contrast, perspective control, and simplification to produce a more powerful artwork.
2. Adding or Removing Elements
Discover how to edit your scene with confidence — removing distracting or unnecessary details, and introducing interesting elements (figures, light accents, shadows, or movement) to enhance storytelling and depth.
3. Creating Mood and Emotion
Learn how atmosphere transforms a painting. Through control of light, shadow, edges, and brushwork, you will explore how to create a specific mood — whether peaceful morning light, dramatic skies, or nostalgic urban charm.
4. Using Colour to Serve the Painting
Understand how to shift and harmonise colours beyond what the camera captures. You will explore warm and cool contrasts, colour temperature shifts, and tonal control to strengthen emotion and unity in your work.
This workshop is suitable for participants who want to move beyond photo-copying and develop a more confident, expressive, and personal watercolour style. You may bring your own photo as a reference for the workshop.
