LEARNING JOURNEY In Conversation with (Susan Olij) Artist In Residence By TASA

EXPERIENCE: Artist In Residence
By TASA

What happens when the studio moves into a public space—and the act of creating becomes a shared experience?

EXPERIENCE: Artist In Residence by TASA invites visitors to witness and engage with the artistic process in real time. Over the course of the residency, featured artists will transform the space into a working studio, turning their thoughts into form—right before your eyes. From mark-making to model-making, each moment is an opportunity to see how ideas evolve, how materials respond, and how art is made, not just shown.

This residency is open, interactive, and fluid. Visitors are welcome to observe, ask questions, respond, or even contribute. The focus is not just on finished artworks, but on exploration, dialogue, and the unexpected outcomes of working in the presence of others.

Through this live-in-the-moment approach, EXPERIENCE becomes a platform for connection—between artist and audience, process and product, thinking and making.

Venue: 41 Jln Pemimpin, #01-03 Kong Beng Industrial Building, Singapore 577186

About the Artist In Residence: Susan Olij
Susan Olij is a Singaporean painter born in Indonesia, whose work navigates the perspective of an outsider. Travel is central to her practice—not just as movement, but as a way of seeing. Shaped by a life of cultural displacement, her paintings move between observation and abstraction, exploring the tension between belonging and estrangement. Working with drawing and painting, she uses formal techniques while also embracing spontaneity and experimentation. Her artworks are rooted in a sense of place, yet always view the world through the eye of a traveller—raising more questions than answers, bringing a new perspective to the familiar, and interrogating the complexities of identity and place. In her current work, she experiments with inserting language—such as signs and onomatopoeia —to push beyond formal composition

Her academic journey includes degrees in Fashion Design from Kent University and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, She completed an MA in Fine Arts at LaSalle College of the Arts, where she then served as adjunct faculty in the School of Fashion until 2018 and continues to teach short courses.
